Moving to a new country comes with a long to-do list. The good news: once a few key things are arranged, the rest falls into place much faster. Here is a practical checklist for your first weeks in the Netherlands.
1. Register at your municipality
If you plan to stay for four months or longer, you need to register at your address with the municipality (gemeente). After registration you receive your BSN, the citizen service number you need for work, your bank, healthcare and taxes. Make an appointment as early as possible, because waiting times can be long in bigger cities.
2. Open a Dutch bank account
A Dutch bank account makes it much easier to receive your salary and pay rent and bills. Most banks ask for your ID and BSN.
3. Arrange health insurance
If you live or work in the Netherlands, basic health insurance is usually mandatory. Arrange it quickly, as there are time limits once you start living or working here.

4. Get your DigiD
DigiD is your digital ID for government websites, from taxes to healthcare. You can apply online once you have your BSN.
5. Set up utilities and internet
In many rentals you arrange energy, water and internet yourself. Compare providers and plan installation early, as internet connections can take a few weeks.
6. Ask about the 30% ruling
If you were recruited from abroad, your employer may be able to apply for a tax advantage known as the 30% ruling. Ask HR whether you qualify and what the current conditions are.
7. Find your long-term home
Once the basics are arranged, it is time to think about where you really want to live. Rent or buy, city centre or suburb: our team helps internationals make that choice with confidence.
